A landscaping masterclass from Graduate Gardeners combines expertly crafted dry stone walls, paving, wildflowers, and a sloping Nidagravel grid driveway. BALI Award-winning Design & Build 2021.
Project Overview
Graduate Gardeners were called in to work their magic on Sheepscombe House, a Grade 2 listed Georgian Manor House in Gloucestershire, set in a stunning location surrounded by a rolling landscape and valley views. The garden design had to address the original drive layout and the area to the side of the house, did not do justice to the property, the severe slope that fell across the side of the house gave little 'foundation' to the appearance of the house, providing an impractical turning circle and parking. The brief therefore was to provide a new repositioned drive, a new parking area so that cars were not sitting right outside the house, a new position for a garage/stable, and a garden area that sat directly outside the house.

Installation Details
Given the topography of the site, careful planning in the design process was needed in order to fulfil the brief. Planning permission and listed building consent was needed, the choice of materials was therefore paramount to the success of the project. The other key factor of the design was making sure the layout linked with the existing areas of the garden and the landscape beyond. Award-winning garden designer, Mark Draper, selected Nidagravel grids for the project to ensure stability of the sloping gravel driveway. Using a combination of Nidagravel 130 grids for the flatter areas and Nidagravel 140 grids for the steepest part of the driveway with a short section of tarmac by the automated gates at the top of the driveway where there would be a stop/start point for vehicles at the steepest point. With a large amount of soil shifting, the design cleverly incorporates recontouring of the lower lawn and wildflower areas, meaning that all spoil generated could be kept on site.
The Finished Results
At the BALI National Landscape Awards 2021, the garden was an Award Winner for best Domestic Garden Design & Construction ?100k to ?250k.
