Stunning garden design including a sunken gravel terrace with built-in seating and a beautiful water feature designed by Claire Merriman Design. Nidagravel 129 gravel grids were chosen to stabilise the gravel seating area.
Project Overview
A stunning garden design by Claire Merriman Design for a large garden surrounding a new bespoke property in Surrey. Part of the brief for the garden design was to create an indoor/outdoor space that made the most of the views and provided a space for entertaining. Inspiration for the design came from the ripples in the lake which lead to a design rippling out from a central point. Everything in the design ripples out from the front door.
The sunken gravel seating area with central water feature and Cor-Ten metal-edged grass steps that lead to the main lawn area create the perfect sheltered spot for entertaining guests or just relaxing and enjoying the views of the surrounding garden and landscape.

Installation Details
Garden designer, Claire Merriman, choose gravel as the surface finish for the sunken seating area because she wanted a porous surface that both looked nice in itself and would also compliment the stone of the house. In order to ensure the gravel surface was firm underfoot and performed well, Claire selected Nidagravel 129 gravel grids to stabilise the Ashton Keynes 4-6mm gravel. As the seating area was sunk into the ground, drainage was really important and the stabilised gravel surface ensured there would be no issues with pooling water, etc. The gravel surface also helped to break up the paved areas and provided a nice contrast to the hard landscaped aspects of the design. The seating area is retained with a combination of natural stone walls and Cor-Ten steel edging for the grass steps to the main lawn.
The finished results
The use of golden gravel for the sunken seating area creates a relaxed feel to the space and contrasts nicely in both colour and texture to the paved sections of the design. Nidagravel 129 ensures the gravel surface is flat, stable, and easy to use - the ideal spot for a gin and tonic.
